Vegetable Garden Ideas

It’s about that time of year – time to starting thinking of great vegetable garden ideas! I can’t wait for it to be warm enough to start, how about you?

Normally our garden is set up as a salsa garden. Basically you’ll find tomatoes, jalapenos, and green peppers. Sometimes we’ll grow red peppers too, and dry them (those plants produce quite a bit – far more than you’ll ever use in one year!). Tomatoes we always have an abundance of as well, and I’m tired of chopping them.

Instead of our normal garden, I think it’s time for something different. Last fall we really got into the pumpkins both for pie and for decorating. So this year we might just plant two different types of pumpkins and see how that goes. Our main garden area is big enough to let them take over, so why not?

I might sneak in a tomato plant somewhere just because it wouldn’t be summer without garden fresh tomatoes. Although I have a feeling a few plants from stray seeds are hiding in the garden right now waiting to surprise me. It’s just a matter of cleaning up all the dead plants from last year to find them. 😉

What are you planning to plant in your garden this year?

  1. I can’t wait to try making my own batch of salsa this year! I keep saying I’m going to but it never happens 😦 Although, I’ll be honest, it’ll probably come from store-bought ingredients, lol!

I’m just learning how to get my “flowers, trees and bushes” gardens going. I started last year and I really want to focus on that again this year. Maybe next year I’ll do the veggie garden?

That said though … I *really* would like to do at least one tomato plant. As you already know, tomatoes are my absolute favorite!!

Anyway, back to the salsa – I really want to try out your recipe for the salsa because first of all I love how “open-ended” it is. It gives me the basics of what I need to know and then I can pick and choose what we like. Seriously, my family loves salsa so much I can’t buy it fast enough! (Guess I should be happy that one of my kids’ favorite snacks is chips and salsa, eh?)

  2. There is nothing better than homemade salsa with ingredients from the garden! And tomatoes are so super easy to grow. The first spring I was in this house I did tomatoes and HOLY COW they took over! I had tomatoes coming out my ears!

Peppers of any type can get picky some years – last year was terrible for our peppers. Not quite sure why, but they just didn’t do so well. In fact, I was lucky we had farmer’s market in town last summer because I ended up breaking down and buying some. That’s when I decided to do something different with the garden this year.

Seriously though, when you finally do make it, you’ll LOVE IT!
