PostHeaderIcon Birthday Present for the Old Guy

My dad has to be the hardest person in the world to buy a present for. When he’s hungry, he cooks. When he needs personal items, he buys them. And collectible or non-useful items? FORGET IT! For years we bought him nothing but sweatshirts and tshirts, but now he’s so stocked on clothes he’s actually requested that we don’t give him any more.

So, what do you do to show your appreciation and help him celebrate his 60th  birthday with a personalized, unique gift?

Since he’s a big Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan, the kids and I decided to make him an extra special present that he WOULD use and would not just sit around collecting dust….

The first thing we did was take a hot chocolate container and dressed it up in gold and black. It actually says “Beer Money” on the other side, because “Grandpa” likes his daily beer. Ironically, he’s stopped drinking because of a health condition, and the container now holds all the money he’s saving! Double win for us and him! If you were doing something special for a friend or family member, you could replace “beer money” with any other passion they might have. Such as gambling, shopping, etc.

The container, while cute, didn’t seem like enough to me. I was afraid it would still sit around collecting dust, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. So we added this customized book of his favorite activities, decorated with his favorite teams….

Happy 60th, Grandpa Pete!

He’s a HUGE lover of Suduko and crossword puzzles, so we printed out a few we found online. I cut them down to only what was needed, and pasted them into the book….

We also included a game schedule for his two favorite teams on the back of the “booklet”. Pages were alternating Packer colors, with a few icons and pictures to fit the theme scattered on each page.

All-in-all, he absolutely LOVED his unique birthday gifts, and that was no small compliment! It may have not looked like an over-the-top present, but it focused on all his passions in life. The gesture made him feel understood and loved, which is what we were aiming for. Mission accomplished!

Happy 60th birthday, dad, we love you!
