Outdoor Activities for Toddlers

It's a beautiful day, and your toddler or preschooler is begging to go outside. What to do when you get out? Outdoor activities for toddlers doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Remember the most important aspect is spending time with your children. What you do doesn't matter as much as being with eachother.

The ideas listed on this page are simple outdoor activities for toddlers. They are either low cost or completely free, depending on what you already have in or near your home.

Walk to Park

Walking to the park is so simple, yet something we often forget about. Of course, this requires you live near a town park. If nothing else you may want to drive to a local place.

If you live in town near a park, the walk alone is enough to keep them busy. When you there, of course they'll even have more to do. It's a great time for you to relax a bit and enjoy the day, keeping an eye on them while they bounce from one activity to the other.

Play Fresbie

If you have a small backyard, you might need to go to the park to do this. However, if your yard is big enough this is a simple activity you can do at home. This activity not only gives you a chance to spend time with your child, but teaches them hand-eye coordination as well. Don't worry if they can't throw or catch - worry about having a good time.

Baseball/T-ball

Another possible at home activity if your yard is big enough. All you really need is some cheap baseball equiptment (plastic ball, plastic bat) for younger children. As your children get older, this is a sport they will love to play as a family and with other friends. Growing up in a close neighborhood, playing baseball was one of our favorite things to do. Teaching your child rules of a game and how to play can be a very powerful thing!

Walk Around the Neighboorhood

There's many interesting things to do while walking around the neighboorhood. You can count the animals and birds you see, count certain colored cars or house, or any number of fun games.

If you live out in the country, a walk can be more interesting and create even more outdoor activities for toddlers. Ask them questions about what they see, hear, and smell. You could even go so far as to bring a list of what to look for on your walk.

Pool Time

One of the best things about toddlers is they can be easily pleased. You don't have to spend that much money to spend a day at the pool. Small kiddie pools costing under $20 can keep young children busy for hours. Although a trip to the local "big" pool can also be an extremely fun treat and something they enjoy.
