Chili recipes are a dime a dozen, and some make a pretty big deal over their chili. With good reason too – there’s some EXCELLENT chili recipes out there, some spicy, some not so much.
It took me quite a few years to even attempt making chili. No idea why, really, I just never made it. But when I did, I tried the “throw together” approach I use for just about anything new I try. I honestly don’t even think I was trying to make chili the first time, but it’s what it turned out to be!
This chili is a huge hit with my significant other, since he doesn’t much care for anything even slightly spicy. The kids love it too, since it’s easy for them to chow down on.Please do note this is really a basic chili recipe with very few spices, so feel free to add or change anything you may see.
Easy & Mild Chili Recipe
You will need:
2 lbs ground hamburger
(2) 30 oz cans chili-style beans
30 oz can petite diced tomatoes
30 oz can dark red kidney beans
1 Tbs minced garlic or garlic powder
1 Tbs pepper
2 Tbs salt or seasoning salt
1. Cook hamburger over medium high heat in the pot you plan to make your chili in.
For this step you can use a lower percentage of ground beef, since the amount of fat adds to the flavor. Make sure the hamburger is fully cooked before adding the rest of the ingredients.
2. Add cans of beans and tomatoes
The types of beans and tomatoes are only a suggestion. You can adjust the types of beans and sizes of the cans to your liking. Personally, I like more dark kidney beans in my chili, but the rest of the family does not. So I settle for this combo that’s loaded with meat and “hides” the tomatoes. Chunkier cut tomatoes are “spotted” and tossed out by the kids and big kids, but not the petite cut.
3. Add the spices. Stir well.
As with the cans of beans, the spices and amounts are a suggestion only. Add more or less to fit your family’s tastes. Also, you can use additional spices that you have on hand such as onion powder, chili spices, or specific blends found in the store.
4. Continue cooking on medium high heat, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes or until chili is at the thickness you desire.
5. Top with cheese and crackers. Enjoy!
